I am olooking at the P&A on Harley's site, and I see no other options for a tach kit other than the combo speedo tach stuff. Is that the only option available for the new Customs, or am I missing something. I searched all of the other tachs out, and they always say (except 07 later fxstc ) so I am at kind of a loss. 500 bux plus install is a lot of money to spend for a tach, not to mention the waste of a good speedo.
I've wanted a tach for my 07 FXSTC for over a year. Last I checked HD offers nothing other than the $500 combo. I agree with you that its a lot of money and a waste of a good speedometer that came with the bike. I've looked at some aftermarket tachs, but haven't found one to my liking yet.
I was in the same situation and ended up getting the combo. Its damn expensive but it looks great, and when I put mine on somehow the odometer lost exactly 150 miles. I wouldn't pay for install, I put it on in a few minutes, its straightforward but an HD service manual takes out some of the guesswork. It really finishes off the dash without the clutter of a bar mounted tach.
Note: The combo tach doesn't have a clock or radius mileage
Take a look at pages 650 651 and 652 in the '08 Harley catalog. I put one of these on my '07 Heritage. I had one of the speedo/tach combos...didn't like it from the moment I installed it.

I had the same dilemma lately. I wanted a tach for my
Deuce. After tallying up the cost of adding a mini tach
with bracket and housing, it came up to the same price
I payed for my Dakota digital Speedo/tach. And it was
super easy to install. Plug and play.
