I posted this in the tech section but got no hits on it...thought i might get some help here!!
Not knowing a lot about this so i need some advice. I have a '97 Fatboy with what i believe is the stock exhaust. I have noticed i have a leak at the cross over pipe. Plugs are now fouled and I'm thinking the leak might have something to do with it. Is there a different set of pipes (without the cross over) that i can bolt on keeping the stock sound and don't require re-jetting the carb.
How old are the plugs? You might want to replace them with new gapped ones.
I do not have stock pipes on my Fatboy...but you may want to find out why yours
are 'leaking' (Unless you just don't like the crossover).
I have never heard* an 'aftermarket' pipe manufacturerthat says "This pipe
is just as quiet as a stock harley". If you want OEM sound....fix what you have.
*(I am sure someone makes a quiet pipe.....I don't know of them)
plugs are new and gapped and had fouled after about half hour of city driving.....not sure if ill replace the pipes or repair the cross over...just was more curious if the leak could be the cause the the fouled plugs
The pipes are most likely NOT the cause of your fouled plugs. Plugs foul in two ways, too much fuel or too much oil. If you bike does not use excessive amounts of oil, your cause is most likely fuel related. This can occur by running too rich a mixture, carb flooding, or poor/no spark. Check your carb mixture and then your ignition system. If you don't find a problem with the carb, you'll find a problem with the ignition. A bad coil, or spark plug wire, etc.
Are your plugs fouled Black? Too rich of mixture. Are your plugs fouled White? Too lean. Only slight chance that the pipes are causing that, either way.
I agree with everything listed above and would also recommend checking your carb. I see you're in Windsor, Ontario. Store your bike winters? I'd check & clean out your carb. You have a 10 year old bike and store it winters. You're bound to have some buildup in the carb. If I were you I'd fix the leak in the pipes, pull the carb apart and clean it &rejet it,clean the air cleaner. I'd also check the coil & spark plug wires as stated by Bowtieman. Sometimesgeneral maintanence is all you need.
what are the plugs gap at i asume 40 and was it running all right before you changed plugs as
i recall you never stated if it ran ok before plug change your what the plugs were gaped at
before doing anything else i would grab a new set of plugs gaps at 40 then go from there.
just me but regaurdless fix the pipes i wouldn't be able to roll like that
