OK- if the NT and STC are essentially the same mechanically, how hard is it to pull the seat and backrest off the STC and slap on a NT seat? My guess is that these could occasionally be found on ebay cheap.
There are 4 bolts on the fender struts to hold the sissy bar on and two that hold the seat to it. So its not very hard or time consuming at all. But if I was going to be doing the switch seat thing I would be looking for adetachable sissy bar I could modify tofit the Custom seat. That would make it a lot easier and quicker to change out.
As for finding one on e-bay, that's certainly possible, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting. That seat is VERY comfortable and I suspect that many of thepeople whomight ordinarily get rid of a stocker seat for anaftermarket model willstill keep the stocker, just for that reason.
What I'm shooting for is the NT seat on the STC. Are you doing the opposite? What detachable seat is popular for these bikes? OEM or aftermarket?

All seats are "detachable" on a Softail. Most are only held on with one screw or bolt in the fender.
Me, I have no plans at present to replace the stocker on my Custom just because it IS so comfortable. Besides I dislike the idea of playing musical seats everything the wife wants to come along. Even if it is less than 10% of the time.
But "IF" I do get a solo seat for it someday, its going to have to be at least as comfortable as that big fat pillow the factory put on. Otherwise (IMHO) its just notworth the effort or cost. But if I should happen to find one that makes my butt happy,I will start looking for adetachablesissy bar.

No, the Dyna and Softail frames are completely different. The Dyna frame and rear fender is if nothing else a bit narrower because of the skinnier rear tire on the WG.
The fender is also very slighty different shaped. At first they look the same, but if you look close, the flip at the end of the WG isslightly straighter in profile on the WG than the Custom or NT.

I bought a sundowner seat and a detachable backrest for my NT, whenever my wife wants to ride with me instead of her own then I just snap on the backrest and sundowner and away I go. I liked that route because it gave my NT so many different looks. Hot rod with the stock badlander, and touring with the backrest, two up seat, and windshield.
I know you can fit two on the badlander, but it's like sittin on a 2x4 for the passenger.

OK-

with the matte black fender support on the NT, how do I get a Softtail Custom seat, with detachable backrest to match without a chrome support?

Is there a mfr making this seat support in matte black?

If they don't, buy one in chrome and have it powdercoated. The stock NT seat ain't that great......none of the Harley stock seats are excepting the FXSTC. The FXSTC seat is waaay comfy, but looks like a couch with the pleats and buttons, may not fit what your'e trying to look like. I would look at Corbin or Mustang seats, maybe Saddlemen as well. You can buy a solo seat with a detachable pillion pad or a 2 up seatandthen from HD you can buyquick detach sideplatesand a sissy barwith your choice of heights, and have them powdercoated whatever color you want rather inexpensively. The sissy bar/sideplates are independent of the seat and it won't matter what seat you use. I have a Corbin gunfighter and also aCorbin hollywood solo, so I am partial to Corbin, they work, look great, and are very comfortable TO ME. I like leather seats! Mustang makes fine seats as well and I would check them out too.
Good luck with it!

hey HD32141,
Welcome!
Looks like you've gotten lots of help and ideas here. Here's my 2 cents worth.
We are the same size 6' 34" inseam, I'm about 215...and I too had a VTX. I had the 1300C..
Traded for a Night Train in '07. Never looked back, but just like the VTX your gonna buy STUFF for it.
First I went for comfort. The seats on VTXs really suck, so I had a Mustang.
Seats on a Night Train kinda suck too, so again I bought a Mustang, and Mustang tank bib too, get rid of that plastic panel.
Can't believe HD put that on there, but anyway...
I like the looks of the stock Night Train seat, but only could handle "bar hoppin' on it.
Now I just keep the Mustang Seat on and have a detachable wrinkle black sissy bar and luggage rack.
I use it so much I just leave it on. Girlfriend likes it better too.
I added the 3" extension plates, ( not in the picture) these are a must for longer legs and I'm alot more comfortable now.
As you can see in my sig pic, my stock bars have me stretched out. Not bad for me around town, but longer trips get to my lower back and shoulders. May go apes or slammer bar, but I've had to slow down on buying bike stuff for now.

Personaly, I'd like a nice cross between a softail custom and a train...working on it!

-Biskit

New Guy here...

coming over from a Honda cruiser. Let me say first that I love the 105 anniversary Wide Glide

The salesperson at New Smyrna HD tells me it's better for me due to a short torsoe and long inseam. I'm 6'0 with a 34" inseam, and had to put a forward control kit on my VTX to ride it more than an hour.

But I have always droooooooooled over the Night Train and the little Mrs would be more comfortable on the STC. This is an opinion from just lookingat the bikes MANY times. She's 5'0 and abuck twenty.

Tell me what you think. Every one of you knows more about this than we do.And thank you in advance for the help!
HD32...here's my take. Buy which ever bike you like the best...look wise. If you think the NT looks the baddest, which I would agree, then buy it. If after buying it you find that you're not comfortable, then just modify it to make you feel comfortable. It's not rocket science. I too came from the Honda world before my NT, but I modified the hell out of my Honda too, so....stock sucks anyway.
