Hi everyone,
I'm thinking of going from an 07 Dyna low to a like new (very low miles) 06 softail classic.
any thoughts on the smaller engine and 5 spd vs 6 speed?
Thanks for your thoughts.
Ray
I wouldn't do it if I were you. You'll hate it, after being spoiled by the newer engine. And to get the bike to where you will want it will take another 5 grand for the engine work and the tranny.
Plus, the counterbalancers will eat up some HP as well. What exactly don't you like about the dyna low rider? I had a 93 and loved it. I got a softail this time around because I always wanted one. But then, I traded up from the 88 to the 96. made my decision easier.

I don't see any improvement in hp with the 96" over the 88" with the stage 1 kit & pipesinstalled. they are all about 75 hp and 80 trq. only + is the 6 speed...
Good morning. I have an 06 Softtail Heritage Classic with the 88, 2-1 Vance and Hines Pro HS Pipe and Stage 1 breather. I dyno at 76hp and 77 lbs. of torque. What I like about owning the 06 is it was the last year HD made the tried and true 88. I enjoy the ride of the softtail, and the 5th gear throttle response when you roll out around slower traffic is great. The Heritage is a great bike for overnight or daytrips. We live on theUpper Texas coastand ride year round. Average temp here is 76 degrees. The wife and I like to ride to Galveston for the day (200 mile round trip) and the 88 has plenty of get up and go to ride two up all day at 70 mph. God, Family and Texas
the heritage will be a comfortable ride. you might miss 6th gear, but you won't notice 8". it's stroke and not bore anyway, isn't it? not a big difference at all.

I agree. I like having the last of the run. Tried and True. There is lots of room for 2 up riding. I have V&H straightshots pipes and a Stage 1 breather. I like lagging the gears 'cuz it sounds good on my pipes. When I'm riding 60-65, it sounds like I might need to shift. That's 'til I twist the throttle and find I'm just beginning the sweet spot of torque upto around 80. I could use the 6th gear over 80.The speedometer needle creeps up from 90-100.But, who rides that fast all the time?
I have to agree. The 06 Heritage is a sweet ride. Plenty of power and comfortable enough for the long haul. Personally....I dont think you can go wrong.
McPastor, I have the stock Heritage handlebars on my 06. I see by the picture of your bike, you have changed your bars out. What are they?
I'm 6'1" and the reach on the stock handle bars are fine, but due to theheighth of the bars at times my hands go numb. Also experience some pain in my shoulder rotor cup. Did you ever experience anything like that? Thanks for your time. Sharp looking bike!
