WaterBuffalo...this is why every Harley owner needs a parts manualfor their particular ride! Part number break down, bolt grade and size, fluid information, technical specs...everything you need! I look my part numbers up BEFOREI go to the dealer...if there is a mistake I want to be the culprit. I trust the guy behind the counter...but I just like to have my own research and answers ahead of time. It makes the Parts Counter visit that much quicker!

Like several others have stated...there are no HD specific threads! You either have boogered up threads or the wrong bolt. Having a tap set handy for the most common sizes while wrenching your HD is a good thing!

I use my local hardware store whenever I can so I don't have to buy 'HD exclusive parts'...but pay real close attention to the bolt grade. If you don't know the markings on the bolt to tell you the grade look it up in your Parts Manual.

And finally...if it is a part or accessory that you don't need right that minute...go and buy it from Zanotti (https://www.zanottimotor.com/shopping/partLookUp.html) and save some serious $$$!

Good luck...

Steve

SCJE8, thanks for the heads up on Zanotti Motor, I already looked up some parts I want and your right, you can save some cash thru them. How are they to order from and work with? How long does it normally take to get the parts? Thanks again, this is why I come on here for some great info like this.

www.boltdepot.com If you know the size, they have it but after shipping costs I doubt it's any cheaper.

I second that. The parts catalog for your year will give you what you need. But OEM parts can be pricey sometimes too so this isn't the universal solution. But it'll at least tell you for sure what you need. You might also look on Ebay or in classifieds here. I'm sure someone is unloading the same thing you seek for a few pennies. You can also find those parts in Drag, J&P, and others...usually at a considerable cost savings.

I think you ran into a combination of factors rather than HD sucking. If they did suck so bad I doubt there would be so many people here riding them and in a position to respond to your thread. But enough of pointing out the hyprocricy.
[ul][*]You had an HD parts person that either didn't understand what you wanted or didn't know where to look.[*]You had an Ace dude that just wasn't spun up on motorcycles or what you needed.[*]You need high grade bolts for the peg mounts so they don't snap off on your passenger. High grade, especially in chrome, is going to cost a bit more, HD or not.[*]The previous owner screwed you by not giving you the stock parts taken off. You are trying to replace parts that are normally OEM installs. With a few exceptions, every HD comes with passenger pegs. For that reason, except for chrome versions, you aren't going to find peg mounts on the multi-fit wall hanging from a hook. So unless they have a set of take-offs in the back, HD is either going to sell you chrome ones, or have to order you replacements from the parts catalog.[/ul]In any case, I completely agree with you that the cost of your chrome peg mounts and bolts was too high. But I say that because it was the wrong parts for what you needed rather than simply because they were HD parts.

You can always get a parts catalog for the stock part numbers. Gotta be cheaper that buy the chrome one that you don't want and ridiculously priced bolts.

the threads are flat, thats why Ace didn't have the bolts for them.
-the parts guy understood what i wanted, he found the chrome version, i said i wanted that in black, its not rocket science
-the Ace dude didn't need to know crap about motorcycles, he needed to find a bolt that fit in the hole of the part in my hand
-i got high grade, and even the harley bolts weren't chrome
-the previous owner gave me a huge box of parts, stuff he had taken off or stuff he bought extra, he didn't screw me, they just weren't in the box, almost definitely not intentional.

I was just trying to point out that with the parts catalog you could order the original parts and save some bucks. I think yours is an 06 and if so the part numbers for the stock parts are as follows (straight from my parts catalog):

Part no. Zanotti's price

50942-00 Support, passenger footrest (2 needed) $26.91
4721Bolt(2)&nbs
