I wear gloves year round...need the full gloves in cold weather, and wear the fingerless the rest of the time...keeps my hands relaxed on trips...and when the b!tch in the SUV t-boned me 5 years ago, totaled the sled, broke my leg and sent me sailing across the intersection, the pads that were ground off the gloves on impact with the street would have been my palms down to the bone...each to his own...
I wear the Aerostich elkskin roper,http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/...r-p-16818.html. It is the best glove I have ever worn. No break in required. Soft as a baby's bottom since I took them out of the package. I prefer the natural to the black because the natural will not get dye on your hands in the rain like all black gloves, regardless of brand, that I have owned.
I picked up a pair of leather Harley gel-padded palm gloves at the dealership on clearance. They cost $20 otherwise I would have stuck with my nylon mesh Craftsman Professional mechanics gloves which have a lot of gel padding in them. I still use them for hot weather riding but because they are nylon, I quickly realized I was going to have to either invest in two pairs and rotate them to extend their lives or buy leather ones. I am not so worried about the falling and scraping reason for gloves, I just wanted some cushion for long rides so my hands don't go numb or feel tired from vibration. It also keeps the back of my hands from getting sunburned, which happens easily to me. I wear them every time I ride.
As a note, Craftsman redesigned their gloves (mostly cosmetic but the new ones have more gel padding over a larger area as well) so the ones I have which new cost about $25 are going for $9, if your local Sears still has any of the old style left. They are actually pretty good motorcycle gloves if you, like me, wear gloves to dampen vibration.
Wells Lamont $9.00 Walmart. Been wearing a pair I cut the fingers off ofsince '82, last forever. Got em for free too. When new, wet them and rub in saddle soap or mink oil makes them nice and soft.
i just ordered a pair of those in tan for the same reason. I don't care for the black on my hands and I don't really care for black gloves...I was looking at the Held "steve" glove and decided against it because it didn't come in tan. If these don't work, I'll get a pair of Lee Parks...they look like good gloves also. I've been whacked in the hands by all kinds of flying things and if, GOD forbid, I ever go down again, I want my hands protected as much as possible.
