I got a set of Screamin Eagle (SE)pipes from a friend. All I had heard were really quiet. I really didn't want to put them on the 2007 FXSTC and not get any more sound. The original stock pipes were very quiet--sounded like a sewing machine running.
We took the two screws out of the rear of the SE slip-ons and with a few taps with hammer and a screwdriver we drove the baffles and all that fiberglass out of the rear of the pipes. Its no wonder the SEs are quiet, they are packed tight with fiberglass.
Anyway, we took the fiberglass and trashed it. The SE baffle only has 6 rows of 5 holes in the pipe for all the exhaust to go through. We took a drill press and punched another 30 holes in the rear half of pipe baffle tube, doubling our air flow capability.
I still can't believe the difference in my bike with the new pipes. It can breath now and the performance is a remarkable change. We didn't remap it and there is no backfire or anything that I can see wrong with it.
I was really disappointed in the original amount of acceleration I had with the stock pipes. It now has a great sound, quicker accelerationand this ol' country boy is happy with the bike for the first time since I bought it!
Gut the fiberglass and screen wirein you SEs and you can't believe the difference.
Don't know what you consider quiet...my family hears my *** coming down the block with my SE II's intacted from the box...Taking the fiberglass out and making it BREATHE better doesn't help it. You actually are losing power. You need a little back pressure. Evidentally you're fooling yourself thinking you're getting better accelleration. I took my baffles out and fiberglass and the damn thing sounded like the pipes were in a fishtank. Bubbling like crazy on decel...Sounded horrible. Put the stuffing back in and viola, all better.
