2001 softail standard - Finally got to go for my first ride here in WI, last weekend. I seem to have a noise or vibration at mid to low rpm. Seems to be around front cylinder, or cam area. I check heat sheilds and any things else that can rattle, sounds like engine noise to me. I know they had cam bearing trouble with the 99 and early TC88's, but not much after that. Bike was fine when I winterized it in NOV. Anyone got any suggestions. Can I put a hotter cam in it, without increase cubes, what's it going to run me in $$'s. Bikes got 13,000 miles, I've only owned it since Aug 07.
Depending on how you winterized it, you have a little pinging going on. Run the tank down to almost empty and try a couple of tanks of fresh fuel before you act on anything. The oil also tends to collect a lot of moisture when it sits so it will take a good long ride to boil out all of the moisture.
If you do have some top end problems that would be the time do do an upgrade since you gotta get in there anyway. I think I figured out around $3000 for new cans and cams.
