I have a 05 Fatboy 88cui with 23K miles. In runs perfect! In the last two weeks it has the following symptoms:
The speedo stop working. Sometimes it works in the middle of a ride.
The odometer comes on and off. Mostly stays on.
The engine light and the security light comes on and off. It will go away after 10 minutes or riding.
I replaced the battery about 2 months ago.
All the other lights work (signal, headlight, etc)
Also pull out the sensor on the transmission and see if there is metal shavings stuck to it(it's magnetic), just clean it off and reinstall it, if you have a intermitten problem this is probably the culprit.
I left a store about 1 1/2 years ago and noticed that myspeedometer and tach had stopped working. Called the local HD dealer, since it was still under warranty. Took it in the next morning for them to look at. Every thing worked again on the 15 mile trip to the dealer. They said they found a loose wire. My bike has had numerous accessories, put on mostly by the previous owner. I figure that was the cause of the loose wire. I haven't had any problem since then.
It would be handier if the tach and the speedo were on separate circuits. That way if it happened again, if just the speedo went out I could use the tach to estimate my mph.

That was the first thing I did when my instruments went out. There wasn't anything on the magnetic part of the plug. I think I will start checking it every time I change oil, might save me some grief.
