Default New Deuce!

Hey Guys!
Finally pulled the trigger and bought my First HD...after 5 moths of searching finally found the one...01 Deuce, 2,800 miles ($11,000). Rode all day today, just amazed how this bike handles. Such a great riding position. Even though it has stock pipes I think it sounds amazing, very nice and throaty. Below are photos from the seller....

Couple questions...
1. When I apply the front break at speeds below 30 I hear a brushing or rubbing sound. plenty of break pad left. any suggestions? Taking them out and sanding them? Replacing the pads? This hard to do?

2. Got a small scratch on the back fender (someone took the seat off for cleaning, seat screw left a 4 inch scratch..). Can this be buffed out? How is that done?

3. I don't really understand the factory security system...what is the purpose? If the ignition *** is locked, what does the security system actually do? There is no alarm is there?
Thanks! Glad to be a member of the terrific forum!

tim002: Congrats on getting your Deuce; GREAT looking scoot with very low mileage!! I'm afraid you will have to wait for more learned Forums' members to chime in about your technical questions. Enjoy that bike!

Welcome to the Forum and congrats on the sweet bike...that is a great deal on a low mileage scoot, geez mine has over 3k and she is only 8 months old....if it wasn't for winter there would be a ton more...

Anyway, I would pull down the front pads and have a look at the face (replace if they look funky), also check the rotor while your there... as for the scratch, depending how deep it is ya might want to get some touchup paint form HD and apply just a little at a time to build up the gash then buff it out.
Not sure about the security system you have, might want to ask HD what stock system they offered that year providing it is a stock system.

Hope this helps a little.

All bikes with drilled discs will make some sort of sound when you apply the brakes. If you listen closely, the back one makes the same sound only it is reflected more by the solid rear wheel. The physics behind it is swept area etc. Somthing like when a tire runs over a crack in the road, it makes a small pop. Compressed air and all that crap. Do I sound like a dealer??

Congrats on the new bike. Rare to find one that is unmolested so you can build it yourself. I like my Deuce a lot. Ken

Hey tim002,

Nice choice on your Deuce man.

1. Could be dust on the pad. Try taking it out and brushing it and the caliper (lightly) with a small gauge wire brush, or try new pads... not that pricey to change. Lindal or something like that has an excellent rep online.
2. Cut and polish... if not too deep, else a touch up paint pen then polish or worst case scenario, re-spray... though i'd consider a new scheme if you go down that path, may as well if you're going to that effort. HD now sell a propper screwdriver for removing the seat screw that prevents slipping...though it's serious overkill.
3. I'm not 100% as my 07 has a different setup, so no solid idea. I believe it is linked to motion so if someone picks it up off the stand (changes it's axis) the alarm sounds. Don't know i thats connected to an immobiliser for an 01, but I assume it is.

Suggestions for mods:-
(a) Forward control extentions set - arlenn ness (if you're 6 ft or taller), or a full chrome control set if you're full o'coin
(b) How heavy are you? Stock rear suspension settings are for a 85kgs (187lbs), Get your dealer to set it up for your weight makes a HUGE difference. Plenty of details via search here.
(c) New Air cleaner and full exhuast system.. with SERT or PC3... do a search online here for tons of info - dyno if you can to fatten up the the torque curve (just had min done, awesome improvement)

The rest is your personal preference, i.e. black or chrome, braided or normal, drag or apes etc etc. You'll get there, check the Deuce picture thread for inspiration.

Congrats again.
