I have a twin cam 88 stock motor in my 03 softail standard. Thinking about boring it out to 95 or 103inch. Which one would you guys prefer to put it in your bike? And a rough estimate on how much ill be spending upgrading to a 95 or 103? Id appreciate your advice!
Dont know how much you will spend - but when I had my 2000 88ci
I upgraded it to 95ci using Screaming Eagle parts with cams and headsand just about got 100 hp out of it.
It ran great!
I am thinking of doing the 95" kit, don't want to put the cash out for the 103". I lot of guys here have gotten great resutls with just the 95. A lot have used aftermarket cams like from Andrews, Head Quarters, or the SE 204 cam.
Stroking to 103 costs a whole lot more than just the 95" big bore. You actually have to modify the cases to stroke it. You can get kits from Head Quarters, GMR, Zippers, or a host of other performance companies that will easily produce well over 100hp/100tq out of a 95". Going from a stock 88" to that willbe a huge difference in power output.
Well it mostly depends on how much money you want or can spend on it & then what kind of horse power you are looking for? Usually a properly set up 95" kit will get you a 100 hp & torque, & generallydepending on what your dealers labor rate is & what componets you already have installed this modification should cost between 4K & 5K dollars, this should include a good set of cams, andrews 50g cams or SE 211 cams , SE heads ,or ported & polished , SE flat top pistons, SE a/c set (use the K&N filter) you can actuall buy the SE backing plate (chrome) , o-rings & bolts seperatly , then the K&n filter for less than the HD ac kit. & a goo set of pipes , vance & hines pro pipe ,cycle shack dual staggered, V&H big shots, & rinehart2 n 1 are all good choices, ifyou have fuel injected boke a SE race tuner is a must, have a qualified tech create you a customer map, if you do all this i can guarentee you will get 100 + hp & torque from you bike.
The only reason to do a 103 is if you want more hp and you got money to burn , or if in my case you engine blows up !
MY best friend went from 88 to 95 on his '02 Deuce, everything was ok until he went and had a Stage 3 done, he says the Stage 3 ruined the performance in his bike. Just wanted to mention that.
I would go with the 95 you can get great performance out of a 95. Unless you are drag racing I would go with the 95 good set of cams, pistons and heads. Also if you do that you need a SERT.
