Since your post specifically speakstoHandlebars, I 'll focus my response to your question.
If you are tall, I would suggest a pair of Burely Beach Bars if you want a more dirsireable riding position, coupled with a 1 1/2 inch Wild One Chubby riser, a Springer/Heritage seat and yes, contrary to what HD says, it will fit the Deluxe because I put one on my 2007 Deluxe. This combination has resulted in a WAY more comfortable riding position for traveling for me and I am 6'2.
HOWEVER, if you are not tall (over 5'10)this combination may not be the answer you are looking for.
+1 Have 16" apes on both the softail and the road king. I too had the feeling I was leaning to far on the road king, to the point my back hurt. I'm only 5'8" but with the apes all is comfy and they look good too. And, yes, you'll need to replace the cables but it will be worth it.
