Is there a thread on wiring a socket on a 08 Heritage? I can't find it if there is.. Im taking a road trip to visit my son while he's on leave from Iraq/Afghanistan who just bought a new Fatboy.. I have a Garmin 2610 that has the cig lighter plug for power and I want to install a plug for it.. I bought an aux 12v socket at wallyworld, but am wondering where to attempt to mount and wire it.. I already have the handlebar mount for the Garmin so only need to get power to it..
Thanks Guys!
I put a lighter socket under my seat. It is hardwired to the positive cable and the ground screw right in front of the battery. You should put an inline automotive type fuse unless the device plug has a fuse in it. You then tuck it neatly just in front of the ecm. Then you buy a straight cord (not a coil type) and gently snake it under the tank, behind the nacelle and up to the device location. Buy a RAM mount made for your gps and mount it to the bars.
Thanks pres1, What do you mean by 'straight cord' ? If the lighter socket is under the seat, the garmin plug end should plug into the socket. What am I missing?
The cord they sent with my GPS, cell phone, etc.is one of those coiled cords that allows the cord to "stretch." That would have been tough tosnake under the tank so I bought a non-coiled cord. One end plugs into the lighter under the seat, other end into the GPS on the bars.
Ahh okay.. Got ya.. My cord isnt coiled but has that goofy connection on the end that connects to the GPS.. Hope I can snake it under the tank without it snagging or breaking..
Thanks for the info
If you really want to have a nice installation without some homemade contraption that may not look good and may cause electrical problems, try the powerlet kit: http://www.powerlet.net/products/harley_mid.php They also make the cig adapter cables for use with any 12v cig plug for cell phone, gps, whatever....
Mine's been on for about a year. Looks great (don't even see it) and hasn't given me one bit of electrical trouble. With almost 25 years of turning wrenches, both professionally and personally, I wouldn't classify it as a "contraption."
No offense to your installation...was just giving another alternative....I know if I would have put something "non-standard" together it would have been a contraption, and I probably would have had problems.... ride on!!!
I have a Garmin C580 that I share between vehicles. I bought an extra cig lighter power cord, cut the lighter socket end off, and wired it into the bike's electrical system directley. You can pick up the accessory wire under the gauge console. I have mine wired to a HD handle bar switch and it is powered on accessory or on positions as far as the ignition switch goes.
