I have a 2008 Fatboy.
My brother has a 2005 Softail Deluxe.
We went on a ride to Vegas a few days ago.
We filled up at the same time. We drove about 160 miles. My fuel gauge said empty. My digital display stated that I had 15 more miles left on my tank of gas. My fuel light was on.
His fuel gaguge stated that he had a 1/4 of a tank left.
After we fueld up we both held 3.75 gallons. 43 miles per gallon. I am ok with that. The wind was pretty bad.
This is my question.... According to our owners manuals we both hold 5 gallons of gas. Why was mine empty and his stated a 1/4 of a tank. Is my tank smaller than his or is my gas gauge and digital display not working properly?
I figured the gauge was not correct..... but the bike is only 2 months old. It kind of suprises me to think the gauge could be bad.
Also my digital display said 15 more miles left on my tank of fuel. Do you think it was bad too? Where does it get its information from? If it gets it from the fuel gauge then it would make sense. If not I doubt they both went bad.
I understand I can use the mileage to determine my fuel level. But I also feel that it is a new bike and it should work properly.
Motoprcycle fuel guages suck. It is difficult to have and accurate one. Go by mileage on the odometer. That's what I do. My fatboy is the first bike I have ever had with a fuel guage.

Ditto that. My odometer is my gas gauge...the other is just a reference.
If the digital readout works like the one in my car it measures the fuel flowing to the engine and coupled with the miles posted to the odometer calculates miles left based upon a set tank capacity.
Also is the sending unit is in accurate then the gauge will be.
In my car the gauge may read 1/4 tank but the readout says low fuel.

OK... Now we are getting somewhere. Itsounds to me like the fuel gauge is self contained. The digital readout should not read off of the fuel gauge. So why would both be bad at the same time. I dont beleive that would happen. So either my tank was really empty or something is wrong. Maybe the digital read out does read from the gauge.... but I am with you. I thought it read off of your fuel consumption. Does the 2008 fatboy really hold 5 gallons of gas or is my manual incorrect? The most I have put in it is 3.75 gallons. I didnt want to run out due to my gauge read empty.
They both receive the info from the same sending unit inside the tank. If the information sent is off, both will be inaccurate. Ditto on go by the odometer. I have the six shooter guage with the led lights and have given up on it's accuracy. It will go from 2 lights to a blinking red and then back again.I just use it as a reference and then check the odometer.

Ok.... that makes sense. If they both work off of the same sending unit then the sending unit must be bad or off a little. That doesnt sound like something that I want to mess with. I would like to have it work correctly but I dont think I want the dealer tearing my tank apart.
I know everyone has bad experiences with the gauges but like I said my dads and my brothers work perfect. Maybe they are lucky.
Sowould itbe a pain to have the dealer change my sending unit?
