Default Lift for split tanks.

I have successfully built a 1 ½” lift kit for the two piece tanks on my custom 99 Softail.
I am going to try and do a 3 to 3/12 inch as soon as I have a little time to get to it.
Anybody out there ever done this and can give me some input?

Hi

Can you tell me how have you done that lift? I've been searching a lot because I want to do it in my 99 Softail and never found anything.

If you could explain it to me, I would thank you a lot.

The small lift was pretty easy,.. Remove the tanks, unbolt the front tank mounting bracket from the frame under the neck and remove the speedo hold down bracket. It's kinda like a piece of spring steel with a threaded rod attached to the top to put the single acorn nut in the center of your dash panel.

Your going to have to make a small bracket out of quarter or eighth inch plate with 4 holes to bolt to the front bracket holes with the 2 bottom holes and rebolt the mounting bracket to the top holes. The plate should lift the front tank bracket to just up under the lower frame rail.

There are two mounting brackets on each tank which are offset and rubber mounted onto the top frame rail.. There is enough play to simply leave the rear ones on each alone. you will have to space the front ones on each tank side.

There is one more mounting point on the top front of the tank where you will have to install a spacer as well.

your then going to have to modify (Bend) the dash panel bracket to match the new angle of your dash panel. Take your time with this and get it right. If your off just a little and force your panel on, you wont be happy the next time you try and remove it.

My next plan I believe is to machine new offset brackets for the top rail mounts in order to not only change there angle and raise the front of the tanks higher but move them back somewhat as well. I'm not sure yet but I think I am going to weld in a mount tobolt my bottom mount between the frame rails. I have an extra 14 inches of rake in my neck and run ten over tubes, thus the need to move the tanks backas well when I try this. The top triple tree's are gonna make a mess of my custom flame job otherwise. I was just hoping I wasn't the 1st to try this and could learn from somebody else's mistakes before I make my own. LOL..

The weatherman says were heading into a week of storms, so I was thinking it would be a perfect time to try my plan for a higher lift. And besides the VP of the Motorcycle Ministry has been makin loud noises wanting the parts from the current version for his Fatboy. If all goes well I'll post some pics next week of the and improved version..

I know you don't have the bike anymore but was wondering if you're still around to let us know how you did the 3" lift.
