Well first off after the oil heats up and expands it will leak out the top of the tank as you ride. Secondly, It will wingd up in the air cleaner through the breathers.

The excess can also blow out the vent tube in front of the mudguard. \\; I thought I had an oil leak for the first few months I had my bike. Found out the dealer just over filled it. \\; It still does it after an oil change if I put a bit too much in. \\; Usually levels itself out, haven't had any in my air filter.
when you do an oil change with filter the bike will only take about 2.6 to 2.8 quarts of oil. the sump holds about 28 ounches of oil which is staying there unless you get a scavanger whice is a device which will help you remove the oil from the sump. this ia a product sold on line.
i add about 2.6 quarts after the drain and new filter is installed i add oil to the filter before installing. then add the 2.6 and take the bike for about a 10 mile ride come back let drain a few minutes and check the dip stick and top off to the full when hot mark. i also check mine with the bike in the stright up position which is riding position. i do not trust the angled dip stick think about it the stick is on an angle one side of the stick has a higher level than the other also my bike is lowered and i have a shorter jiffy stand i do not trust the stick at an angle.
I agree "go with the dipstick". \\; If you get too much it can push the filler plug out and you have oil all over hot exhaust and it ain't pretty.
