I also use aluminum foil under the filter. Some owner's drill a hole in the filter to allow the oil to drain out, but make sure you break the filter loose first. I \\;spray brake cleaner on the engine where any oil gets on. It cleans up without leaving any residue.

tried all the obove and said the heck with it now just take the thing off then take brake cleaner and wash off the spill simple and cleans the front of the engine real well

I got some stuff called Grease Lightening. After spraying the area around the filter and voltage regulator, the engine there is blacker (cleaner) than the rest of the engine. Wow!

I can tell there is still oil residue on the wires down there though, probably from previous changes and I just never noticed. I think later this week I will take the cover off and spray everything down there real good, and perhaps the rest of the engine. It's so black it looks wet. Amazing stuff.
