Wow - very sorry to hear that. A friend of mine is telling me to put bars on for similar reasons. I wasnt planning on it til I spoke with him just minutes ago...
engine guard bars are wellllllllllllll worth the $200. accidents happen... that $200 guard isnt just for show.if your bike tips over for any reason (even someone knocking it over), (yep, on a hot asphalt day, the bike can slip on the asphalt and tip).... my womans bike slipped on a patch of sand in the neighborhood... no bike damage, no bar damage, (this on a 700 lbs. heritage) .......... engine guards FTW (for the win)

I agree....

Got rear ended, knocked off the bike. She travelled into an intersection without me and \\;slid on the left side for a few yards. The engine guard was destroyed but saved thousands in damage to the bike. I would say it worked as advertised.

I like the look without the engine guard...but it's just too functional to remove. The piece of mind is worth it.
Bike probably "looks" better without it........but as already said.........it might just save you a lot of damage one day.....both to yourself and your bike !! \\; If my bike goes down, I want it to be on my engine guard........not my leg !!
