Default changing engine covers, need advice

guys,

I have new outer primary, cam, and tranny side covers at the house ready to be installed. I have new gaskets as well. What is involved in installing each of them? do i have to drain and replace all the fluids to do this? are there any tricks? do I need any special tools other than a torque wrench?

the dealer wants about 2.5 hr of labor[&:] i think they are on crack

thanks

You will need to change the oil. drain it first for bothe the primary and tranny. You will more then likley need to remove or loosen you exhaust to get the tranny cover off. Read your service manual also. When changing your Primary cover you will need to put a few more ounces of oil in as it is now concidered to be a DRY unit. If the tranny cover is hard to get off after you remove the bolts, pull the cluth level gently as this helps to pop the seal.

I drained all three on mine... but then I was due for an oil change in all three at the point I changed. I don't know what would happen if you didn't drain. With it sitting on the side stand it might or might not run out.

It probably would not hurt to wait till you were due for an oil change and then do the covers.

The tranny side cover can be somewhat of a challenge. U have to remove the large C clip in there to get the cable off and then unscrew it from the housing. Reverse order to put back in the new side cover. Be careful though as there are ball bearings in there under where the cable attaches. It can be a little hard to get the cable housing started back in the side case so be patient as to not cross thread. Remember how it looked taking it off to put back together. Manual would be good to have also if you already don't. Spend the 50 bucks on that. You won't regret it.

The primary and Cam cover are as simple as simple can be. When you remove the old covers and gaskets remember to scrape any gasket stuck to the engine casing that might have ripped or torn off and stuck there. Also take a rag and wipe off any excess oil or oil film left on the casing where the new gasket is applied.

You won't lose enough from the cam chest to require changing the engine oil, although you will have to top it off. I think the same is true of the transmission.&nbsp\\;

It would be more then worth your while to have the HD Service Manual. If you have a digital camera take pictures as you take things apart.

i actually do have a service manual, but was wanting some more advice from people who have actually do it. manuals often times have more steps in them than are actually needed.

I wimped out on mine, Cam and trans covers. I had the dealer do them with my 1K service. They said it would be two hours. I have VH BSS so they had to remove them. To me it was worth it to not have to buy fluids twice and mess with the trans assembly.
