I remember reading once in Cycle magazine that you could spray white grease in the pipes before installing them and they wouldn't blue or discolor. And to remove any fingerprints and grease off the finish before firing up the bike. Never tried it though so don't know if it actually works or not.

Ok here is the deal&nbsp\\; fuel x air produce&nbsp\\; burn rate as your pipes are diametrically opposed flow rates&nbsp\\; which will produce colouring as temperature builds&nbsp\\; outside atmospheric pressure will determine cooling of metal

I had pipes on a Honda go blue when the mixture leaned out. The motor got very hot and I saw them changing color. Too late by then. They started rusting not long after that. I don't think it's a good thing to color them, but it's the only bike I've had that ever did.

Don't think the white grease would have helped in this instance.

+1
The color&nbsp\\;depends on how hot they get.
And how fast they cool down.

New pipes - spray the inside with heat paint, coat as much as you can get at from the head end, it really works. I did my Shovel 5 yrs ago and there is barely any color and I do alot of in town stop and go's. Years ago they had some compound called "Blue-away" that you polished on and it took the color off.

In my opinion... its the nature of the beast and one of the reasons they run heat shields all the way to the heads these days to try and cover as much as possible... The leaner fuel mixtures these days surely contribute to the problem...
