Hey there, I don't frequent the Softail section much since I have a Sportster, but I have outgrown it very fast and am looking to get an 01' deuce that has 7300 miles on it. I am looking for some input to see if anyone else has made this upgrade and if it was worth it. I will be riding two-up a lot and doing a lot of highway riding. The Sportster sucks for both of those things, so any improvement will be better. I weigh 230 and my wife weighs 150 will the stock suspension be sufficient? Thanks in advance, Troy.
Stock suspension is just that. Having said that, I am confident it will handle both of you and I'm sure you will think it a much smoother ride as compared with the Sporty. Of course if you can swing it I'd strong recommend Progressive shocks, fork springs, and a good 2-up seat. At a minimum get a seat (and backrest). Pick the seat based on comfort first and looks second. If you ride two-up a lot it'll be worth it. Plus, if you are both sitting on it - who cares how it looks, no one can see it.
I'll never bad mouth a Sportster but the wife and I both moved from Sportsters to Softails, with her moving to a Deuce. Hers is a solo only setup but I get to ride it once in a while and its plenty comfy. We are in Monterey CA area and she's taken it to Vegas, Phoenix, San Fran, Santa Barbara, and more without complaint.
If its a good deal and you want it I say go for it.

Thanks, that is the answer I think I was looking for.
What Progressive shocks do you recommend?
I have an 07' Deuce and it handled my wife and I just fine with the stock suspension. I weight a bit more than you and my wife is about the same as yours. However, I installed an air ride suspension by Street Boutique Customs, and it was even better. The sissy bar and seat back are specific to the Deuce, however, they are on E-bay all the time. The is a short and a tall version. It's somewhat of a pain to install if you have big hands, however, with the air suspension it is much easier. One other note, I love my Deuce, but, get used to the term "except FXSTD" on many parts for softtails, a Deuce is it's own animal in many respects and not all parts will fit it. That's not to say there aren't plent of upgrades available, you just have to look a little harder.

Suspension: The stock suspension will work fine, but you will have to adjust it to be a little stiffer than factory. With you + 150 lbs you may tend to bottom out on speed bumps etc. The shocks are easy to adjust. Upgrades are available as others have said.
Ride comfort: The way the ride position is on the stock Deuce you will find that you have all of your weight on your tailbone (on a long trip you will feel it). Suggestion: 1. Mustang makes a great two up seat configuration. 2. Consider changing the handlebar to a mini 8 or 10" (Below shoulder height... any higher hands tend to get numb). Bring the bar back to allow you to use backrest fully .. (Stock bar wants to keep you pulled forward).
Believe me I would love to see you get the Deuce for obvious reasons but I think if you would take the money you would have to put into it for a lot of two up riding you'd be better off buying a Heritage or something similar.
Hard for me to say that but I think if you're doing a lot of touring a different ride would be better in the long run. On the other hand the Deuce is the best looking softail IMHO and if that is what you are going for then jump all over this one!
check out the lepera seat that i have too, its a little pricey but my woman and i can ride all day no problems...........and hes right about the suspension.....im 6'5 about 280 lbs, i never bottomed out once with the stock suspension, but with about 1 inch of lowering i can do it very easily.
Love my deuce changed the shocks ! Wife use to ride on back all the time, no complaints have a backrest and touring seat for it that I am looking to sell, pm me if you are interested.
Well, brought home an '04 deuce today. Got a much better deal than the '01. The only I don't like is color, purple. Not that purple is bad, just not for me. It came with a boat load of extras; backrest, HD color-matched hard saddlebags, engine guard, fog lights, quick disconnect windshield, and V&H big shots, 95" kit w/diamond edge heads and jugs and pretty much chrome everything. I'm gonna sell a lot of this stuff as I don't like the look of everything it. So if anyone needs something make an offer. I need to pay for a paint job. Anyway this was the ride I was looking for, I have a grin from ear to ear. It is 4 years older than my '08 sportster but 20 times better. I thought I was never going to be comfortable on a bike till I rode this thing it is awesome. Thanks for the input and advice. I will post before and after pics later.
