From what I saw when I removed my tank you should not have to... if you can reach and unplug the gauge from the harness you should be golden (of course you will also have to plug it back in)

Did the Skull LED on the Heritage. Took like 30 minutes and did NOT remove tank. No problems.

When you install the chrome bezel on the right side, it helps to warm up the 3m sticker with a blow dryer to get it tacky for a good clean fit.
