Default Rejetting carb

Greetz to All!

Getting ready to hang a set of Vance and Hines Longshots on the 05, I heard it is necessary to tweek the carb when doing this.
Dealer wants 75 clams for the kit, being a retired GM Tech I was always adamant about using factory parts. Is there something on the outside that works better and less expensive? (notice I did not use 'cheaper') Your thoughts?

I don't know what the jetting on a '05' would be but you should be able to get just the jet's from youre dealer for $3-$5 a pop and some on this forum should be able to give you a rough idea for the jet size you might need to in the ball park.

I'm not sure if this will help, but I used the keihien recalabration kit on my old ladies 2002 sporty. It included various jets to use depending on modifications. The bike runs strong and gets 50-60 mpg depending on city/ highway.

ordered through J&P cycles. not sure if still available.

Mike,

I would suggest a 45 slow jet, a 175 high jet, 2 coils cut off of the slide return spring, and a 1988 1200 Sporster needle. You will also have to pull the plug from the bottom of the carb to access the idle screw. Just drill a small hole in the plug, insert a wood screw just enough to grip, and pull on the screw. The plug will pop right out. The idle jet will be about right if you turn it out about 2 or 2 1/2 truns from full bottom.

The purpose of the 1200 sprotster needle is that it has a different taper due to that model not having an accelarator pump. It will give you a little better low end.

Regards,

Bill

Hung the V&H pipes tonite, ooooya! Sounds like a Hog should, took her out just enough to discolor the pipes. Thanks for the info on the carb, now I see why I get a "poot" from the carb on the low end. Will be in the hunt for some jets now!

PS anyone looking for a 05 Heritage factory exhaust system??
