Default Fatboy Detachable Windshield.....Good,Bad,& Ugly

I am looking at getting a detachable windshield for my 06 Fatboy. What size to you recommend? Clear or Smoke? Thanks in advance for any input.

I got the kingsize clear version on mine because I wanted the most coverage. I have recently been considering getting the smoked lower profile replacement windshield and putting it on my hardware. I believe the low profile smoked version is about 4 inches shorter than the kingsize (standard) version. I try to use mine only for long trips. You'll be amazed how much nicer it is on the freeway with a windshield. You won't feel beat up when you get to your destination.

They are great for the freeway Why do they call it a freeway I also use it for the winter weather to keep me semi-warmer.

Woody,

I have two windshields for my Heritage Classic (pics in my gallery). I love the way my short one looks and it does great on short runs, but it obviously does not provide the protection my king size one does. I’m glad I have both. Which you decide on should depend on your primary reason for wanting one (long road trips = king size, cruising in town = short, bobbed size). Good luck and let us know what you decide. Oh, almost forgot, smoked or clear? Smoked if it’s a short one, clear if it’s tall (JMHO).

I'd say the right size windshield depends upon how tall you are. I got the King Size Nostalgic windshield. Being 5'11", I can just see over the top. I like it because it reminds me to keep a good posture while riding. I suppose you can get the windshield cut to a custom height if it is too high. Go to the dealer and try them out. You should be able to figure out which size to buy real quick.

In my opinion, ugly...necessary, but ugly. I have a king size 100th anniversary edition that I won off eBay for $70 and I use it for long runs, but any riding under 70mph off it comes....

I bought the 14" windvest last summer. I agree that a windshield is a necessary evil at times but this windshield allows me to keep some coolness to my bike. Mine is a little short when I have my stock seat on but with my stripper seat it works perfectly. Being 6"1" I should have got the 16" like they recomended but I was looking at the cool factor. The windshield works great for keeping the wind off me on shorter rides but for longer trips I'm thinking a larger windshield would be better.

I don't know what height my windshield is becuase I bought it used with the bike, and haven't used it yet. I have a bartrell bag that attacheds to the handlebars, and I use that instead. Idoes a great job, and it doesnt look like grandpas bike. I am actually scared to put the windhied on becuase I know that I wont want to take it off. I not putting it on for laughlin. I learned how valuable a windsheild could be when I worked as a motorcycle messenger for 10 years. 8 hours a day on the road can be a little exhausting in a large urban city.

I have the regular size (larger size) detachable for my bike. I seem to go through spurts where I will use it most of the time and then go for days without. Usually it is after a trip that is a little bit longer then I had expected (bugs in teeth and all) when I will put it back on. I like the size and can just see over the top of it. Although I haven't ridden with a smaller windshield, I don't think that I would like it better than what I have. Echo the fact that it looks ugly though. After I get sick of the look then I take it off for some more abuse again. Color is just a matter of personal taste. For the taller windshield I would probably stick with clear though.
