I have an '07 Night Train and replacing the rear wheel and pulley. I found a 66 tooth pulley but it's 1 1/8" wide. Is it ok to use? I'm worried about the extra space the belt would have to move around.
Not sure, I just measured my belt tonight for the same purpose. My 06 Fatboy has a 1 1/8" belt. i think mine is a 70 tooth though. Hopefully someone posts with some helpful info for you.
So I've installed the pulley and there is 1/4" of free space for the belt to move side to side. Is there any safety issue with this? It just looks weird!!!
You might get away with it and never have any problem, then again you might not..
Being a retired machine repairman the only time we used a wider pulley or narrow belt was with a crowned pulley, that way the belt stayed in the center, but if you have a flat belt pulley (which it is) and it not aliened perfectly 90* to belt, it (belt) will want to climb the pulley to the high side and then possibly walk even further. this would then cause more tension on the tight side of the belt instead of equal across the belt that could cause premature failure or even come off the pulley ... Not trying to scare U but it could ?? be serious.
Now that said, I have no experience with the Harley belt or pulley setup but with the price of them I would talk with the best and most trusted wrench I know and ask him. Could save you some money and or your life..... AND MOST OF ALL, PIECE OF MIND..
i just ordered a 1" belt and recieved 1 1/4". i am debating on sending it back and getting the right one or just get a bigger belt. question is will the bigger belt fit on my 07 nighttrain with a 200mm rear tire?? if yes has anyone done it?? did you have to change the drive pulley??
I don't think the wider belt will fit, they use the skinny belt to clear the tire on the 200mm tire bikes. I would be afraid the belt would walk on the pulley as there is nothing to keep it centered.
