I am new to the world of Harley and this forum. Been riding sports bikes for 30 years. Now that I am too old for them, I went out and bought 2009 Fatboy few days ago.
Two things that bothers me is that when I start the bike it makes a loud cranck noise when it first starts, is that normal?
also when shifting, especially to first gear, it makes noise like its going to break the transmission
What do you guys think of these noises? BTW I love this bike. I wish I thought about it earlier. Thanks for your time.
that clank your hear when you pop her into first gear is absolutely normal. Harleys are known for that. like someone else on the thread said.....it's character.
I have both a 2009 Deluxe and a 2009 Rocker C...the Deluxe clunks as you said yours does my Rocker doesn't...took the Deluxe to the dealer said it was normal and over time would quiet a bit...took it to a local custom chopper shop mechanic and he said the same thing...it has actually quieted down some as I've put more miles on it

Man!!!!, you have 2 new bikes? must be nice to be rich LOL
Yeah someone have mentioned to me that with time that noise will quiet a bit.
Again, as long as it's normal I am fine. As long as I don't break anything (which that's what it sounds like ) I am fine with it.
my nightrain makes the same noises, like the others it does get better with time and miles. After changing the lube it is much quietier, but then again it is a Harley, I read somewhere they designed the noise in there so it sounds like the old bikes. Who knows for sure but it is normal.
Worst thing you can do is believe the dealer that Syn3 is okay for the transmission. It's WAY too thin!
Put Redline "Shockproof Heavy" Differential oil in the transmission, Mobil1 V-Twin in the motor, and conventional primary oil in the primary. The transmission will quiet down, and shift smooth as butter.
Air-cooled, pushrod motros sound like a big sewing machine when running....you can hear the thrashing of the valvetrain etc. mainly because there are no water jackets to dampen the sound. As stated above, the starter sound is normal because the starter is out in the open.
All is well. Welcome to the world of REAL motorcycles.
