Guys,
I have a guestion about the chain drive on my FXSTI... How is it lubracated? Is it an oil bath inside the primary housing or is it dry? I was thinking about changing out the primary cover to add just a "little" more chrome to my ride. I don't know if I'll do it right away (Katie's holding on to the check book with both hands these days) But was wondering if it would be a messy job. There doesn't look to be a drain plug under it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Bob
It is an oil bath, and if you take that derby cover off with the bike on the side stand you will have a mess. The bike needs to be vertical when you remove the cover. You can change the cover without draining the oil as long as the bike is standing up.
If you want to drain the oil, there is a plug(Torx) on the bottom of the primary cover near the back. You will have to look under the bike to see it.

Bill, he asked about the primary cover, not just the derby. Or are you just trying to get him in trouble with his tight-fisted Missus when he pulls the cover and the quart of oil runs all over her purty garage floor?
Rich, skip and Bill,
Thanks for the info, the garage floor is spotted up good thanks to two teenage boys that can't hit a oil drain pan to save their lives[:@] I'm going to get manual and worry about the primary cover this summer. Again, thanks guys. Bob

****** that checkbook, tell her youll "cut" her off. then go get the chrome you really want!! this is good advice, cant say it has ever worked for me tho!
My bad, I was just thinking Derby cover, as that is what most people change. Glad He didn't listen to me, or he would have had a mess. Good save, thanks.
