Default Primary Cover

Guys,
I have a guestion about the chain drive on my FXSTI... How is it lubracated? Is it an oil bath inside the primary housing or is it dry? I was thinking about changing out the primary cover to add just a "little" more chrome to my ride. I don't know if I'll do it right away (Katie's holding on to the check book with both hands these days) But was wondering if it would be a messy job. There doesn't look to be a drain plug under it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Bob

It is an oil bath, and if you take that derby cover off with the bike on the side stand you will have a mess. The bike needs to be vertical when you remove the cover. You can change the cover without draining the oil as long as the bike is standing up.

If you want to drain the oil, there is a plug(Torx) on the bottom of the primary cover near the back. You will have to look under the bike to see it.

Regards,

Bill

Bill, he asked about the primary cover, not just the derby. Or are you just trying to get him in trouble with his tight-fisted Missus when he pulls the cover and the quart of oil runs all over her purty garage floor?

that would be a good mess.

there is a drain plug like Bill said, it's in the bottom of the primary cover under the cluth pack.

it is a fairly easy change, I did it on my 2000fxst with little difficulty.

before doing a lot of changes i'd recomend the shop manual, its a good deal at around $50.

you might want to consider changing the derby cover at the same time, as i recall it is polished aluminum.

good luck getting the check book.

Rich, skip and Bill,
Thanks for the info, the garage floor is spotted up good thanks to two teenage boys that can't hit a oil drain pan to save their lives[:@] I'm going to get manual and worry about the primary cover this summer. Again, thanks guys. Bob

Skip,

My bad, I was just thinking Derby cover, as that is what most people change. Glad He didn't listen to me, or he would have had a mess. Good save, thanks.

Regards,

Bill

Mike,

When my wife threatens to "cut me off" I tell that she has to find out where I'm getting it first.

Bill
