I'm not at my bike or manual, but, it goes something like this:
Hold the speedo select/reset button in while turning on your ignition to enter the code-reading mode in your odometer. You can press the button momentarily to cycle through the categories and when in any of them, hold the button until it starts reporting the codes (or says none). I believe that if there are codes, subsequent button presses will cycle through the list.

I hope someone will come on and explain it better if this isn't correct.

keno, that was the right way to do it. I followed your direction and under the TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/Turn Signal Security Module) it came up with the code 61143, which of course I can't find anywhere. All of the trouble codes seem to start with a letter. Any clue as to what this means? Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it.

The 6 in your code might be a B as in:
B1143 (HFSM) Security Antenna Short to Ground


Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC’s) through 2008
Speedometer Self Diagnostics: The speedometer is capable of displaying and clearing
speedometer, tachometer, TSM/TSSM and ICM/ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).
1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.
2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.
3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting
should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps
(battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word “diag”
should then appear.
4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the
first P flashing.
5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the
one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the
odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer
6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in
for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word
“none” will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view
additional codes if they exist.
7 - Record the codes.
8 - If DTC’s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number
of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in
and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release
the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then
recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.
9 – Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.
10 – Turn Ignition switch to OFF.
On models not equipped with a tachometer "No Rsp" will appear when the tachometer
identifier is selected.
"No Rsp" will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this
procedure.

CKP – Crank Position Sensor. The CKP generates an “AC signal” which is sent to the ECM
where it is used to reference engine position (TDC) and speed.
DTC – Diagnostic Trouble Codes
ECM – Electronic Control Module. (The Computer) Computes the spark advance for proper
ignition timing and fuel control based on sensor inputs
(from CKP, MAP & TP sensors) and controls the low-voltage circuits for the ignition coils
and injectors.
The dwell time for the ignition coil is also calculated in the microprocessor and is dependent
upon battery voltage. The programmed dwell feature gives adequate spark at all speeds.
ECT – Engine Coolant Temperature. Sensor also controls the cooling fan relay that provides
12 Vdc to the fans.
EFI – Electronic Fuel Injection
EFP – Electronic Fuel Pump
ET – Engine Temperature sensor
FI – Fuel Injectors
FPR – Fuel Pressure regulator
IAC – Idle Air Control actuator
IAT – Intake Air Temperature sensor
ISS – Ion Sensing System…detonation detection
MAP – manifold Absolute Pressure sensor. The MAP sensor monitors the intake manifold
pressure (vacuum) and sends the information to the ECM.
The EMC then adjusts the spark and fuel-timing advance curves for optimum performance.

So, that being said, I just need to find the wires and see where it may be shorting out? I hate electrical problems, they are such a pain in the @#$.

Cool ...and it only gets worse!

Only .02 (may be all it's worth, too) I can add is the antenna is 25KHz and MAY have four leads (although all may not be used) running to a molex connector (needs special tools) to the antenna and MAY be located behind your battery. Picture I looked up is antenna is a sealed, small black module located behind battery mounted on the frame crossmember. Diagram also shows another single-lead antenna (434 MHz) but I believe this to be for optional pager system. I'm don't have a schematic but a general diagram but verify antenna by number of connectors (both used or not) and by color of wires to pins #2 & 3 of the antenna connector from TSM/HFSM using the service manual schematic. Can also find the P/N on the antenna and call dealer to verify. The troubleshooting for "DTC B1143" is in the Electrical Diagnosis Manual, Section 3.21c if you want to buy (about $58) or someone else can relay the info here; ED would also list component locations! Look for pinched/exposed wires and give gentle tugs on the connectors to check for loose ones. The antenna is non-serviceable and, if bad, should be replaced. To shut off the alarm and secure power while servicing the bike, with HFSM fob present, turn on the ignition to disarm the security system, then turn off the ignition and remove the maxi-fuse within five seconds. Hope this all worth at least .02!

I looked through my manuel and couldn't find anything on it. I pulled the battery out and check all of the wires in that area and didn't find any problems, got frustrated and figure I'll try again this weekend. I just hate to pay the dealer to fix it, but, it may end up as a last resort. Thanks for the assistance, I knew I could count on the guys on this forum to have some answers for me, so thanks to everyone.

Since it all started after you installed the bars, I would think that a pinched/frayed wire in that area would be the culprit?

sctusa, I think your right. I pulled the seat off, battery out and check all of the wires in there with no luck. Time to pull the tank and look there for a problem.

If the turn signals, brake lights, starter button, etc. are working properly, I'd go for checking under the speedometer console for pinched wire to speedo-sec light (Lt.GN/V). Don't feel bad: gotta see why my '99 Ram won't idle after left camper light on and I recharged dead battery! No manual + 25 miles to storage yard + it's raining here! LOL

Thanks for the suggestion, that was something I've checked already, but, before I pull that tank off I'll be sure to give a look once more just in case.
