..., the tune is only as good as the person doing the tuning."
Thats the problem with the mastertune
In all seriousness, I did the research and decided that I would get better results from the trained wrench down the street than I would if I started tweeking in the driveway.
I think this is what it comes down to. If you want to tune it yourself, go mastertune. If you want/trust the dealer to do it, go with the SERT.
Either option will allow you the flexibility to make the changes down the road that a canned map (download) will not.
It all depends on what you're going to do to the bike. If you're just doing stage 1 with some pipes, the download is fine. In fact, this go-around I have the download, SE air cleaner and Vance and Hines ShortShot Staggered pipes. I don't have any running or popping issues at all. On the Night Train I had before the Rocker C I knew I'd be doing all sorts of things to the engine, so I went ahead with the race tuner and glad that I did.
If you do get it dyno'd ask the dealer to give you a copy of the program they put in it that way if for any reason the bike loses the map all you have to do is upload it(at the dealer) but you will not have to re-dyno. This is nothing more than burning the mapping they programed to a cd.
Congrats and Good Luck
I have the same type of question and I"ve had so many different stories depending on what dealership you go to. I wan to put VH short shots on my bike will i need a tuner? One dealership is telling me for 40 bucks I can have them download a one time deal. My buddy has 2005 glide he put on new pipes breather and never got a tuner. His bike runs great.
