I do not have a service manual yet, but was wondering if checking the Primary chain tension is something I could do myself? I am quite handy with my hand tools but was not sure if anything special was needed....I have tried doing a search on here and I have not found a writeup on this subject. Thanks for the help.

ajay and icdred, it wouldn't hurt to check the primary chain tension, that will make a similar sound to what you are descibing too, especially the "slapping" sound. Hard to tell without hearing it.
Depending on location.. The ticking may be from the counterbalancers as mentioned (lower part of engine) or from valves (above heads) or from cams or chain and chain tensioner area (lower right of engine).. Hard to say.
My opinion.. for oil Mobile 1 V-Twin.. Great stuff.. Far better than Syn 3 at about the same price. Really quieted up my bike and runs noticeably smoother and cooler.
With that year and that mileage though, if you haven't considered, if it were me, I'd have the chain tensioners at least checked.. I plan on eliminating them altogether when I get that age on my fatboy.. swap to an S&S gear drive kit and worry no more about it. That's totally another topic but I always tell folks that are new to a Twin Cam.. It's their one main issue. Lot's of postings here on it.
Other than that.. Welcome to your new bike and forum and keep 'r vertical!
Your bike is totaly screwed - and I'll tell you what, since your such a nice person.... I'll take it off your hands for say $50?
But really, my Fat Boy does the same thing, only a little lower in the rpm range than midway. Never had any problems and I've rode it pretty hard every chance I get when I am home.
Okay, I took it into the dealer and they adjusted the primary chain. It sounds about the same....I have decided I am going to ignore it and just ride it. Thanks for all the replies...
So, based on what Possum said, this is not a counterbalance problem, since the Roadglide does not have counterbalancers. Then, if you had the cam tensioner just checked, it must be a normal sound that others just ride with. Enjoy that ride...
What's the ballpark cost(rough idea) of changing to gear drive? Also, when I rode my 02 FB last night the ticking/klacking/whatever sounded worse than before. I'm going to check the primary chain slack tonight. I mentioned this before in other posts that my FB makes a kind of screeming/howling sound that just is really annoying. And also I have developed this klacking sound we've been talking about here that I didn't notice when I first got the bike. Ran the bike up to 75 mph yesterday and am getting this klacking, a little, at this higher speeds on a more consistent basis, something I didn't hear before. I'm really getting annoyed with this bike. Sounds worse every time I ride it.
Terrific post since I have been wondering about the same sound from my 06 Heritage Classic. I thought I read a few years ago that HD engine tick is quite normal....these posts confirm it and have put my mind at ease. Thanks guys!
