In the old days everyone used to think that chain guards were stupid, too...
I have seen what a broken chain can do to an engine case so I never took mine off.
If the belt only comes apart in one spot, I don't suppose that it would have much of a chance of embedding itself in your thigh or left side... and I haven't heard of belts doing anything more than snapping in one spot.
Me... I'm too cheap to buy sprockets... just because I want to look cool and risk getting a rock between the sprocket and the belt. I just dug a rock out of the space between the swing arm and the primary case... so I'm sure it can happen.
I removed mine the moment I got home with the bike. It's like when you were a kid, the first thing you did with a new bicycle was take off the reflectors... not as safe but who cares.
Both of mine are gone, and I've had no problems. If I had to do it all over again, I'd grind the tabs off of the stock swingarm BEFORE I had it chromed.
