I have an '08 Nightrain and my gas gauge is useless as well. Even if my tank is topped off, it will tell me that the most I have is 1/2 tank. I mentioned it to my dealer and he said, "It's a Harley. That's why they put the remaining miles feature in the digital readout."
Just keep your eye on that. Disregard the gas gauge.
And Ford said the same thing about their Explorer tires exploding at high speeds. "It's a Ford. That's why they put in a spare tire."
Being a Harley should never be an excuse when something is broken.
By the way, the original post isn't talking about an inaccurate gas gauge - it is broken.

Reason: afterthought
Well, kkinderen has a point- there IS no excuse for it. However, the threadstarter has a BROKEN gauge, not an inaccurate one. Actually, both are equally useless now that I think about it.
i generally go by the odometer as the gas gauge on my 07 fatty sometimes tends to fall like a rock; then again it tends to fall if I am riding pretty hard on the throttle :-) LOL
When the tank is full it reads full and quickly drops after that. I get about 60 miles after it hits empty. I go mostly by mileage, I keep the ODO on trip. I always get a solid 140-160 miles before I need to switch to reserve and then its 20 miles from there.
My 04 Fatty did the same thing so I took the mount on top of the tank loose and shook things around and it started working again but not as accurate as it originally was, I too rely on my trip odo.
Never had a problem with a fuel gage but I have have swaped tins and replaced fuel filter shells. Getting to your sending unit isn't much problem at all. Its probably just hung up.
