OK, the battery cover is back from the paint shop and it turned out better than I had thought possible. This plastic part no longer looks plastic! I think this is the easiest solution to the cheesey cover.
From the painter: Textured plastic requires an initial sanding to rough the surface. Then shoot a layer of primer. Sand out the primer coat. Shoot the paint coat. Then shoot a couple layers of clear coat.
