We just bought a 2009 deluxe for my wife the engine makes a kind of whiring sound that my 2007 electriglide does not make we took it back for the 1000 mile service the dealer said it was a normal sound for the balanced engine does anybody if that is the way they sound?
I have synthetic in my 07 fxstb and it whines....my buddies 08 heritage does the same....its very noticeable. Every dealer that I've been to said that its normal. Its almost like the engine is starved of oil or something.
We have an '05 Deluxe with 95 stage II. It whirred and buzzed as an 88 and it still does. Drove me crazy originally as I was used to Touring Harleys, and none of them had a whirring sound. Used to it now with the Deluxe.
i was going to say the counter balance. mine is very quiet after changing to amsoil or mobil 1. fith gear wine is also a problem but only in 5th gear. i resolved that with gearsaver from belray. http://www.belray.com/consumer/product.fsp?pid=13637
A lot of different kinds of noises are going to be normal. I have never seen any kind of large bore air cooled engine that didn't make a bunch of different strange noises.
A lot of it has to do with the fact that the engine is made of aluminum castings and is air cooled. Without all the water jacketing to help muffle internal sounds. The engine case and finned cylinders can become something of an audio speaker system.
All the extra bits and pieces of a balancing system together with the ball and roller bearings rolling around may make it more pleasant to ride, but they also add more 'odd' mechanical noises to the mix.
