Trailering my FLSTC
I just used two straps on the front end.(also tie-down strap helpers so as not to mark up the handle bar chrome). No kickstand - just upright and straight- You could also stablize the back end if you wish.. I drove a couple hundred miles not a hitch.
Just make sure your front fender is not going to hit anything on the trailer when you crank it down - I used the ramp as a buffer so as not to bend the fender.
It will hold - just doesn't sound right -- even did the same in the back of my truck (again had to use a buffer so the fender did not hit.)

Use ratchet type tie-downs.
Use the front frame cross just underneath the steerng head (neck) to tie down the front. DO NOT use the handle bars as your main tie down location. If you did use the bars and one popped during travel there is a chance that the bars would then turn and then loosen the second tie-down and your bike is then on its side. Ratchet down until the front forks are slightly compressed obviously using two tie-downs, one left one right.
Move to the rear, use the rear pegs/floorboard mounts as the tie down location. Obviously using two, one left one right. Slightly compress the rear suspension as well.
Do not fully compress the suspension.
Do take off your windshield so the bike does not create drag that applies pressure to the tie downs.

lp has the right idea. If you can, nail down two 2x4s or6s about 4 inches apart on each side of the tires...that way that baby will not scooch or kick out sidways from under the ties downs...
