I have been running a 100w..for 5 yrs, they only last 5-8mo.but at 20 bucks for two who cares,I look like a frieght trian, and cagers move the hell over....
You might be asking for trouble running a bulb with wattage greater than the socket is rated for, in time it will cause you problems, mostly melted socket or even wiring.
i have also been running a 100 watt bulb and had no problems. most of the problems i've heard of have come from bike running a lot of accessories like an ultra classes or something a long those lines. they are pulling a lot more power than a train of a duece
i tried silver star from wal-mart and it would last about a month. after 2 of those i changed to the harley SE bulb. brighter than stock but dimmer than silver star but has been on for about 1 year. I also changed the front lens to a all glass one from bosch. they sell new about 40 and used about 20. they have smooth reflector and the front glass if the lens. it has more of the light below the 60% and gives a flat wide pattern. great at night. http://www.ratwell.com/technical/BoschH4.html

Hey Bob,
Just so I understand it right... You changed out the head light assembly with a Bosch unit? If that's right, can you confirm the model/part number of that unit. And, where do you get it or order it from?
I have an O7 Fatboy as well and I simply installed a Piaa bulb to brighten things up a little. But, the pattern is much to be desired. I would love to change out the entire unit, and, of course, keep the OEM chrome housing. But, if I can change just the headlight reflector and glass by replacing the OEM, that would be GREAT!!
Any help on this will be appreciated.
Thanks,
yep that is all you need change. the picture shows part number 3 301 600 118.

I have had a Sylvania Silverstar in my bike for almost three years and it still works just fine.
It seems adaquite for what I need, but I wouldn't turn down a better solution and would love to see how that Bosh light setup compares.

Bob,
Thanks for confirming. It's been my experience that you can have all the wattage one could ever dare to sitck in a headlight, but it's the reflective patterns and dispersal that counts. I will definitely be giving this a try on my Fatboy.
Now the question is: where do you buy this Bosch item?
Thanks,
