Starter swap
OK, I spend most of my time in the touring section, but I have a buddy who needs some softail help. He has a 2000 night train with an open primary and his starter is weak. He is going to replace it with the heavy duty starter (high compession motor) and we are wondering if the swap is a big deal. A local shop is quoting him 3 hours even though the bike uses the same starter and install procedure as a bike with the standard primary. I have never replaced a starter on a Harley and don't think it can be that hard, but I want to make sure there isn't more to it than I am thinking. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

probably the biggest pita is that the oil tank has to be removed. few special tools needed for the oil lines to be r&r. special clamps for the oil drain line (use oe replacements) and the tool to crimp them. some of the clamps(lower drain line) are better accessed with the rear wheel and fender extention removed. aftermarket are less $. all *****, spyke. are good choices. inside the primary is pretty straight forward. steve
