I'm considering a Fatboy for my next bike. Is it easy to change out the floorboards for normal footpegs if I wanted to? Is it a simple take off and put on? Thanks.
It is fairly straight forward. Biggest issue I had was putting the kickstand spring back on. There is a trick, I just don't know what it is. You'll also need to bleed your breaks, but that is no big deal either, I got a vacuum pump and it made it very easy.
If your going to get extensions you may need to get new breaklines and shift linkage. I didn't bother with extensions. I am 6'1" and don't feel like I need more legroom.
just changed back on a deluxe from forward controls to floorboards...can do it in a half hour if you're familiar with bleeding brakes and of course that nasty jiffystand spring...easy change out though
I agree with everyone else, it is pretty easy. I bought some super nice forward controls on sale for $177, the regular price was like $864. You will need to buy separate kickstand bracket though. Go for it!
If you haven't had floorboards before I also recommend keeping them for a few hundred miles at least. When I got the xbones it was one of the first mods I wanted to do, but took this advise instead. I could have ended up liking it... but I didn't. Just ended up re-enforcing how much I perfer the pegs to boards.
give them a while you may start to really like them. for some reason on a really slow roll in traffic i feel more stable with feet planted on them, not really sure why. after a while i really started liking mine.
Give the boards a good try. I went from boards on my old bike to pegs on a Softtail Custom. Wish I could find a conversion kit to go back to boards.
You get a lot more vibration through your feet from pegs than you do with boards. My '07 Custom vibrates very bad at higher rpm and I know that boards would help alleviate some of this felt vibration.
I also agree that I like the boards better when having to barely crawl through traffic. I believe the pegs all have a **** formed on the end of the peg and you actually have to lift your foot off the peg to clear the **** when having to put your feet down. With boards you just slide your foot off the board onto the ground--faster and smoother operation for me and no chance of a shoe sole hanging up on the ****.
