Got a verbal warning in N Van near the Quay from a motor cop. He said, ..just because you are from the US you can't ignore our rules. I smiled and nodded OK. Then I asked him to cut open my packet of salmon jerky since they took all my weapons at the border.....At least he had a sense of humor.

The schedule to Division 7 of the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations sets out noise levels from vehicles:

Light Duty 83 dB
Heavy Duty Gasoline 88 dB
Motorcycles 91 dB
Heavy Duty Diesel 93 dB
These levels are to be tested with a decibel meter in a test facility and are not valid measurements for the roadside. Instead paragraph 27 says that "The opinion of an inspector as to whether the engine and exhaust noise is greater than that made by other vehicles in good condition of comparable size, horsepower, piston displacement or compression ratio shall determine whether exhaust gases are expelled with excessive noise."

Many owners of noisy motorcycles seem to hold the opinion that they must make lots of noise so that other drivers can hear them. This brings the motorcycle to the attention of other drivers and reduces the chance of collision. It's interesting that anti-social behaviour is a justification for road safety!

I have big shots staggereds on my softail custom, not obnoxious but they are loud. I always try to be considerate when in towns or heavy populated areas. I have been involved in snowmobiling for 27 years and it is a big problem with trails closures related to noise. It burns my *** when someone insists on being a throttle jockey so he is noticed, he gets noticed alright because I usually have to go talk the land owners into not closing another trail. Sorry I got off the subject my moral is if you are considerate of your surroundings "normally" you will not have a problem.

wow, that is a crazy law, taken directly at exhaust!

Here is CT laws.

"Decibels/Maximum Sound: Maximum allowable A-weighted sound levels based on measurements taken at a distance of 50 ft from center lane of travel (Sec. 14-80a. Maximum Noise Levels): Model Year/<=35mph/>35mph-- Before 1/1/1975/82dba/86dba; On or after 1/1/1975/80dba/84dba"

would be hard to attempt to read, if you are on a street, have to set up the meter exactly 50 feet from center lane, then have you drive by at less than 35MPH (80dba)with no other source of noise near you at the time. Seems like it would be a huge hassle to do here in CT, and then over 35MPH (84dba).

I'd frame that ticket and hang it in the garage! Some phat politician probably has a house by the beach and is pressuring the local police to cite innocent people like yourself. At least you have a nice souvenir to remember your trip.
On a side note, concerning the man intefering with basically most of our constitutional rights, Ca sucks. I just got off the phone with CHP concerning my right to carry while on a multi-state trip. Despite having a concealed carry license form the local Sheriff's Dept, Cali does not recognize the license. They stated that to transport a pistol through Ca. I'd have to store it in a locked box in my saddlebag, oh yeah and it has to be unloaded of course. Is common sense and our rights as citizens ever going to return to our country?

To be honest, cops here don't usually dig exhaust noise on Harleys except downtown, beach and residential area, those rich f'uckers live in multimillions houses area always complain about exhaust noise, that's why they push hard. That's why never ride downtown, not because I am not a poser, I hate downtown cops. All I can say is bad luck, I never had problem anywhere I rode.

Can't write you a ticket if they can't measure the sound. Buddy of mine said he got hassled in New Hope Pa, another town with decibel police. When the cop told him to start his bike he refused. Cop walked away. Least that's what my buddy said

went outside one morning..10:30... fired it up..2 minutes later police roll up. Someone complained about the motorcycle making noise.. it's in the garage!! Of course it's loud. He tells me to fire it up outside of the garage..I told him "ain't gonna happen". He threatens me with a citation the next time..so I call the supervisors and complain..someone just being a dick!! There is one ward in Chicago, The Gold Coast, where the a$$hole alderman has cops write tickets for loud pipes.
