Default Drop Night Train Front - Help

All,
Just bought Progressive "Drop In" fork springs to lower my '01 train a bit and I am looking for some help, or advice.

Looking at my train, it looks as though to remove and replace the fork springs I will need to take the top of the triple trees off to gain access to the springs, so the question is: when I remove the cap and the large nut that attaches the top of the trees to the neck will ther be any pre load on the neck bearings? Is that nut just a retainer for the top of the triple trees?

Has anyone out there used the new progressive "Drop in" springs on a train and anyone have any suggestions for this swap?

Thanks in advance!!!!!

Jynx

Put it on a lift and watch out for flying nuts. yes, there will be pressure, but a lot less if you put the front off the ground.

I put the Drop in kit on my 08 Train a couple months ago. You have to remove the nut above your bearings, the 2 caps on fork tubes, loosen the screw on each side of top tree that tightens against fork tube. Have ft. off ground, then take 2nd cap off each fork tube to gain access to springs. Not a big deal at all, EVEN A CAVEMAN COULD DO IT!!! I cut the max off the pvc pipes and got a hair over 2" drop. Good luck

Flashman, It has been probably 1 of the best changes I have done to my Train. Bike is more responsive to body english now in being able to throw it around in a turn, the turns are quicker and feel more solid in the handling. I was never a big fan of the rake of the front end of the Train. I think IMHO now it looks the way it should have from the beginning. I got just over 2" drop by cutting the pvc spacers to their min in the instructions.

Mine's lowered front and rear...handles about as good as a softail is going to with a stock front end.

I did mine and love the results. I did both ends and have to agree the handling is much better

Let me suggest putting in heavy fork oil. With the standard oil my front felt softer, but after switching to SE heavy fork oil the front feels the same firmness as stock. Fwiw.

And make sure you put the correct amount of fluid in each leg. After lowering mine, I put in too much in one leg (don't ask, I don't know) and picked up a shimmy. Dropped both legs, poured it all out, and did it again. No more shimmy. I didn't cut any of the PVC tube (mine is Progressive, but NOT the simple drop-in one), and it's pretty stiff. I'm gonna drop them again and cut a half inch or so off and see how she feels. I also originally used the heavier oil, but it was WAY stiff, so I put the stock fluid in.
