hi i have 1998 fatboy. when going down the road at speeds of about 30mph or faster i have a whistling sound that is coming from the left side down low around the engine i cant seem to pinpoint where its coming from any help?
maybe brakes, you need to try many things like engine off, clutch in, brakes on, helmet on and off, angle lean, i has such a squeak and it was loose motor mount in the back making the noise come from front left
Tom from http://harleygoodies.com/ here. For the fuel cap I would either try getting a new one or wrapping the inside of the old one with something to give it a tighter fit. Maybe an o ring or two that fits on there. It that does not work, a thin layer of electrical tape or some gasket sealer around the loose edge as it sounds like it may be loose. Obviously let it dry first before you put it back on. the o rings i s a better idea as you do not want anything falling into you gas.
Whistling could be almost anything. I don't see a windscreen, so I doubt it is that. Maybe your helmet, ears, who knows. Could be the primary if it is down low on the left side.
the whisler could be just about anything from something wrong with the bike to something simple as wind moving through or over parts of the bike.
Something as simple as the floorboards and such...does the whisle stop once you get to higher speeds or its always there over 30mph? does it change in tone with change in speed? that would point to wind factor possibly.
