Alright fellas, I know we see a million of these posts about a "noise" someone is chasing and I roll my eyes every time I read one too, but....
I was riding along and everything was great, when all of a sudden a slight whirring or wining noise started. It progressively got worse to where it is very loud. It goes up and down with engine RPM and I noticed a puff of black smoke out the tailpipe on startup, which it has never done before and no noticeable loss in power or performance. Any help you guys could give would be awesome! Thanks.

Does it stop when you pull the clutch in and rev the motor? Is it still there if you kill the motor and freewheel?
Clutch in or out, it doesn't matter, the noise is still there cuz it goes up and down with the engine RPM's. Noise goes away when engine shutoff and freewheel.
Check your choke...the tension adjustment could have come loose allowing the choke to close...which will make a whirring sound and explain the black smoke.
Fatboy, not to hijack, but your signature says you've got a Bub 2-1. Is that the Bub 7 pipe? I'm looking at that pipe as an option for my next buy but I didn't think the website listed it for EVO's. Is it overly loud? I'm looking for deep sound in a 2-1 with good ground clearance.
I've also got a whirring noise. Not sure if it's the same, but I'm pretty sure mine is the tensioner. I had it come loose out in Sturgis last year, and ever since I get a good whir especially noticeable when I pull the clutch and let off the throttle to shift.
I had an issue awhile back and sounds the same as you describe it turned out to be the stator and rotor was making contact. Replaced and noise was gone. May take a look at it if your going to be in the primary.
Gonna have to discribe this whir a bit more, does it sound like metal on metal, rubber vibration whirring, is the sound coming from the top of the motor, down by the primary? There are 47 diffrent moving parts in a evo, anyone of them could be it. Run ur bike in ur driveway and kneel down along side it and get an idea of what area it may be coming from first. Then we may have a general idea what it may be.
