Well, news couldn't be worse... Checked the cam bearing and that's what it was. Only about half of it was left in the journal and god knows where the rest of it is. The cam is all chipped up as well as the pinion gear is missing a tooth. The cam journal is scored really bad (hopefully i can get it machined). Inside lifter on the rear cylinder is trashed as well. So, the engine is being stripped down and I should have it completely out by next weekend to take to the machine shop. I could could've cried...
just pulled my 1989 FXR engine out had a noise lost the rear cam bearing too!!
91k km on the bike looks like i need a new case lost the hole bearing. not sure but I think it's time for a ultima 100cid looks like the repair cost will be close to the same as a complete engine.
It's been a long year since the engine went down, but the good news is, it's back and better than ever! Took the engine cases over to Eric Bennett in Long Beach and he machined out the cam journal oversize and fitted a new torrington cam bearing in there. He also machined out the cam breather .030 over and fitted an S&S steel breather. I put in some standard size 10.5:1 pistons in honed jugs and an EV27 cam and had some Branch O'Keefe heads put on her. She breathes in on a K&N filter, out on a Bub 2 into 1 exhaust. Did a dynajet recalibration kit on the CV Carb and an EZ-just mixture needle. I know the EV 27 Cam should be paired with a 9.5:1 CR, but my seat of the pants DYNO machine tells me that this thing runs like a sumbitch!!!! This bike has never run so well!!! I took her out with the wife on the back today and it ran tons better than it ever did with just me on it!! Patience, good parts and good machine work, I love this bike again...

I had whirring at 35 mph. I had removed the rear tire to install a chrome pully.Thought I had tightened the axle nut too tight, but after trial and error,it was just that I had the belt too tight...I backed it off one full turn, and whir was gone. Hope this helps.
