King bags on a softail
people have been asking if I used the "bagger tail" kit on my bike to mount my bags. No. I built the brakets myself and based them off a set made by Mckay's custom cycles out of canada. It wasnt exactly easy but definetly cheeper (if you have access to a welder and a good imagination) I have very little wrapped up in the material (most of wich was scrap I had in the garage) but I splurged a little got them powder coated for around $50. All and all with the chrome hardware ($100) I have about $200 bucks in the whole thing but it could be done for less.

I would like to see a couple of pics of the brackets you made. I have been thinking of putting bags on my bike, just for trips. But haven't decided on how I want to mount them yet. A home made mounting bracket sounds good to my wallet.
You say they are RK bags? If so does the dimple for shock clearance reduce the internal storage space much?

yeah the recess for the shock does take up a little room. I expecially notice it when i put my liners in.... but they still have a ton more space than most bags, like the "throw overs" i used to run.
I am looking to put a tour pack on for longer trips with the girfriend for more space.

Nice job - I added RK hard bags to my Fatboy last weekend and dropped my bike off for paint Monday...what turn signals are you using? I have an integrates turn/brake light, but removed my stock turn siganls to get the bags to fit.

turn signals
they are my stock signal bullets... I bought a kit from harley to bring them in closer but they werent tight enough, however the kit did come with this little bezzle that fit into the recess (the tear shaped one) for the stock stand off. I used it with a bolt that i drilled out (to run my wires) and bolted the bezzle directly to the strut. I think It was about $40 for a kit that I only used one part of .... but it was cheeper than a quality pair of smaller aftermarket signals, and I think it looks better .... kind of a trick factory look.
Ill get some detailed pictures this weekend of the entire setup..... Its been a crazy week.
