You guys ever thought about using an "impact rachet"?
I bought one (3/8" drive) back in the 80's when I worked on VWs and it continues to work to this day. It has a socket drive end and a clip that allows you to set it to tighten or loosen.
You simply set it for the direction you want, put it on the bolt with the proper socket, turn it in the desired direction to preload the torque, and then wail on the back of it with a dange big azz hammer. I use my 4 lb body sledge.
It is amazing how much persuasion you can apply with this little beauty. 8^)
