I have an opportunity to get a 1990 Softail at a pretty go price. The seller sent me the VIN and everything checks out but on thing. It's being sold as a 1990 but when looking up the vin the vin shows as a 1997. That is the only discrepancy the model is the same.
I have read on other websites that there are some discrepancies in the Harley VIN.
Careful. It may be pieced together or even stolen with a switched VIN.
Ask for the title and other papers. Examine them closely and consult the DMV Investigators in your State who should be able to help. I wouldn't buy it until you can confirm it's clean.
Paul, I'd check it several ways to Sunday, sounds a bit fishy to me too. CARFAX supposedly does cycles, and take the other good advice already mentioned here. Remember, "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is"!
Good luck,
