Cool ecm

hey guys,
quick question:
if you want to change your exhaust and or slip ons with an air kit, cant the harley dealer re- program the bikes ecm so you dont have to buy a power commander or similar?it seems to me that if its a computer it should be reprogramable too no?

thanks,
FBRT

Yes.. The dealer as a stage I download they can do that's for pipe and intake upgrades.. When I did it they charged me $125.. I've heard of others being charged more.. On the other hand, I paid $125 for the download and 6 months later I did the 103 and that required a tuner.. I went with the TTS for about $375.. I should have just bought the TTS to begin with and that's something you might think about if you have plans to build the motor down the road.. I'm not saying buy the TTS but maybe look into it or a SEST, PCV or any of the other tuners available as long as you can grow into them..

Do a search around the forum, this is a huge debate, and opinions vary greatly

well i would say if you change your exhaust (not slip ons) and air kit, then you are looking to change the air flow and would require a fuel management option or stage 1 download. Spending $125 to $300 will cost you now and be safe, but being wrong and not doing any of it and somewhat damaging something, will cost you more in the long run.

Archer1968 is right, opinions vary, and some people are ok with just changing pipes without anything else, but some develop problems or weird popping on decel that a fuel management fixed.

But as stated, opinions and experience vary from each user. I was always told if I change pipes and air, need to download or fuel management.

Yes, the Dealer can Download a new canned Map from the MOCO but the Stage 1 download still a EPA compliant MAP that will keep your bike running lean to meet the Fedeal Regulations. It will help but is not an optimal way to go. For the price (125 - 200) depending on the dealer your $ ahead to go with a fuel management system like the DFO, Fuel Pak,ect or a true tuner that will not just add fuel but also adjust timing like the PC lll, PCV, Sert, TTS ect.

I installed a RideMaxx system on the wifes Deluxe when I switched to the 2 into 1 pipes. Easy instal, simply plug it into the ecm. Program it thru a bluetooth connection to my computer. It allows ME to change settings just as a Dyno tuner would, but without the cost. If I want it to run more or less lean at a particular rpm range, I can adjust it on the PC and simply send the new map to the bike , wirelessly.

No wires to connect, takes about 4 minutes to install. Simply unplug the ECM, plug in the RideMaxx, and plug the ECM into that. DONE..

Bike rides nice...runs well, and wife is happy with the increased HP and cooler engine. Cheaper than many Tuners, and the fastest install of all of them.

RideMaxx System

my dealer says for the 07 and newer they dont have a download to be used for adding pipes and breather(stage 1). only other download is the parade mode that cuts off the back cylinder when idle in traffic. i went went thundermax and auto tune and love it

Default not happy

The price you pay for a Harley you think it would have a auto tune system. I have a 2007 stfx v&h big radius stage 1 breather FuelPak. As the weather changes its hit and miss if the bike runs any good. Lots of back firing and decel popping, the harley shop says this is normal. They did a test drive said everything was fine. I have tried ajusting the settings by v&h suggestions still crap....
