I no what your saying with fitment. mine actually came out with some slight gaps, but they were just to wide to fit perfectly, i spent a lot of time down at the dealers with measuring and testing the fitment. and seemed almost impossible to get on flush.Dont know why harley made the Nostalgia emblems in 2 parts like they have. would have been easier if the backing adhesive just was on the badges themselves doing away with the backing plate. then you would have only had to shape 2 instead of 4 pieces of tin.
Could you use some double sided sticky tape on back of the emblems, and do away with the mounting plates?
I wouldnt. The emblem has screws that screw into the mounting plates. The mounting plates sit dead flush against the tank whilst the emblems do not and have clearance on all corners and do not contact the painted tank surface.
I wax and poilsh mine alla time.
I like the fact that I can remove the emblems in a minute via the 2 screws, polish where I wouldnt be able to polish and then reinstall the emblems when I'm done.
Mounting kit is $15.00
No real reason to go ghetto on the Iconic Harley tank emblems!!
Mine were a bitch cause the Softail standard has a big stupid red sticker on the tank under the clear coat. I hated it from day one, bought these off an 04 Night train on Ebay. Took the tank off to get painted, and put the new badges on. I think it changed the whole look of the bike. The wife didn't see the cost justified by the minor change. I did.

I was going to pull mine and even bought new ones but then had second thoughts, H-D did a decent on them and the quality is so good I couldn't get myself to do it.

I have the same tank with the "stupid red sticker" on my '02 and like you, can't stand it. After seeing what yours looks like with the new badges, getting this done just moved up on my priority list, big time.
