noisy valvetrain -- normal?
The closest I can describe it is like piston slap (which I hear frequently in my 98 Mustang GT when its cold), but of course thats not it since it only occurs when the engine is at operating temperature. Sort of a metallic chunk, chunk, chunk, etc. It's pretty loud when it does it.
The engine had a lot of work done by the original owner. Specifically:
Eng. Size: 1550 cc
Heads: SE- flow work by LBP
Cams: HQ-0039 in 236 ex256 580/530
Pistons: High compress- 9.93 to 1
Carb: 42 mm flatslide Mikuni
Air cleaner: Open w/outer shield (stage 1 filter element)
Pipe: V&H pro pipe
Ing: HQ tunable module
Doesnt do it at all when I get on it (it just rips). I run only 93 octane and it just had the 5000 mile inspection at central Texas HD with no issues found (including a 94hp/95T dyno pull). Of course, they probably didnt get it up to full operating temp and keep it there for a while for one pull so it might not have been noticed.
Im thinking maybe just the nature of the cams. Or maybe needs a primary chain tension checked. Or maybe Im being overly obsessive about normal noises produced by big twin Evolution engines (in that case, feel free to put my mind at ease
)
Thoughts, experienced opinions appreciated.
with high lift cams can do make more lifter noise at idle also. Lifter and pinging should not sound the same. so ???
Another bit of info for U is Ur 02 Standard is not a EVO, its a TC-88"/BB95" kit.

(waiting on my Clymer service manual so I will know these things
)
Things you can do to help quiet it. Upper cylinder lube in your fuel & thicker oil. Harley recommends sae 60W when operating above 80 degrees.
