One of the best side mounts I have seen is made by Top Down Products. I own the chrome version of this product (they have a black powder coated version) and scraped pegs through the Tail of the Dragon on three runs, the Cherohala Skyway two times, and road over 2300 miles and it is solid. Can't recommend it highly enough! Great product and great customer service!

This is Dennis from Top Down Products. We have two versions of a very unique side mount license plate mount. It can be switched from Horizontal to Vertical with a simple twist of the backplate. We offer the mount in Powder Coat Gloss or Flat Black as well as Chrome. The two versions, Roto-Plate and Roto-Plate Jr gives you the option to buy with or without a brake light setup. Heck, I made the one I ran (until I changed my fender) on my Train. Took me about an hour and cost nothing, as I had the metal laying around. That one I painted, as I wasn't PC-ing at that time, but if I dig it out from wherever I stuck it, I'd just coat it, now. I used one of the belt guard attachment bolts to hold it, which worked perfectly. The plate mounted vertically, and hugged the swingarm closely, which gave it a good look. It also sat higher on the bike than the axle-attached ones.

So not to be confused with other Axle Mounts, the Roto-Plate has ample clearance as can be seen from this photo of a customer's Rocker Axle mounted Roto-Plate. This was taken on the Tail of the Dragon with pegs grinding around the turns and you can clearly see there's plenty of room to go before the mount would touch.
Not a good picture of mine but here ya go. It started out chrome but I sprayed it with wrinkle finish rattle can, turned out great and matches the NT great!
